Mizuno Golf Irons 2019 - Which Iron Fits your game

Whatever type of player you are or aim to become Mizuno Golf has an iron model that suits your needs. Whether you are a low handicapper or a mid to high handicap golfer the latest 2019 line-up has something that's suits your eye.

Mizuno men's or ladies golf irons have never been one of the cheapest iron ranges on the market available to buy, however, they are designed and manufactured using the best quality materials and processes in the golfing world today.

As the saying goes "nothing feels like a Mizuno"

From the tour players grain flow forged irons to the chromoly irons aimed at the game improvement golfer, this golf club brand continues to be at the pinnacle of feel when it comes to golfing irons.

Mizuno have one of the simplest ranges in golf in my opinion, making it easier for you, the consumer to navigate choosing which set would suit your game and eye best. There are 2 main families:-

MP family - a better players or tour players iron, which has that classic tight club head with minimal offset and topline which the ball strikers amongst you love the look of at address.

JPX family - caters for every type of golfer. The JPX919 Tour is the model to go for if you are looking for a small compact head with thin top-line look at address and require workability, a soft feel and a little forgiveness.

At the other end of the spectrum in the JPX range is the JPX Hot Metal/Hot Metal Pro. If more ball speed is what you require then this is the model for you. The Chromoly 4140M head material in the JPX Hot Metal/Pro according to Mizuno offers a great balance between speed off the face and landing angles into the greens.

The Hot Metal is best for the golfer that needs a solid look at address, thick topline and slight offset which inspires confidence to golfers at the high end of the handicap scale, helping them to put a solid contact on every shot. All this is not at the expense of the expected Mizuno feel.

The JPX Hot Metal Pro offers all of the above but comes in a smaller profile. Which appeals to the golfer that needs that little bit of help on those shots not quite struck out of the centre of the face but prefers the look of better players iron, thinner topline and more compact head design.

On tour the JPX family has been proving quite a success winning back to back US Opens whilst also holding the USPGA Championship at the same time. Even though Brooks Koepka is not an official Mizuno tour player, it has not stopped him from trusting this manufacturer's golf clubs to propel him to his major title haul in recent years. Starting his success with the 900 Tour Series of Grain Flow Forged Irons to this years stunning USPGA victory at Bethpage Black using the new JPX919 Tour.

In fact, of the many victories in the past few years on the various professional tours, Only Eddie Pepperell, winner of the 2018 British Masters was a Mizuno sponsored player.

Many players whether you are a professional or recreational golfer choose Mizuno golf irons because of the feel and consistency you get from their golf clubs on every shot. Over many decades the name of Mizuno has become synonymous with superior quality when it comes to golf irons.

Due to the precision that is employed during the manufacturing process and attention to detail, this brand offers, you have great confidence that you can obtain consistent results and gapping throughout the bag from 3-PW.

The 2 main types of iron head are the Grain Flow Forged used in the JPX919 Tour/Forged and MP models. For players that prefer a soft feel off the face and maximum control then this is the head design for you.

Forged from a single billet of 1025E Pure Select mild carbon Steel. The Grain Flow Forged HD process concentrates the grain more tightly than standard forging processes which result in incredible precise feedback.

The JPX919 Forged model also has trace amounts of Boron infused in it which makes the steel billet 30% stronger. This allows the engineers more scope in a forged head. Such a feature allows amateur golfers the best of both worlds. Superior feel and distance, making this a popular choice amongst today's golfers of every skill level.

The other material used in the JPXHot/JPXHot Pro is Chromoly 4140M. Being a high resilient material, it allows for a new multi thickness face for astonishing ball speeds and feel.

As is the norm for golf club manufacturers if your a lefty like myself, the options are limited compared to our spoiled righthanded cousins. The options available to LH golfers are the MP-18 SC, JPX919 Forged and the JPX919 Hot Metal.

Although not a full compliment to choose from, there would appear to be a good cross section to choose from for us lefties. So there should be an iron which fits the profile you would be looking for in the Mizuno family.

One of the best reasons to choose Mizuno irons is their range of stock shafts, which come at no extra cost to the consumer. This can't be said about all golf manufacturers in the market today.

The customer has an extensive range to choose from, with around 18 different shaft types to pick from. The shaft options available are:-

  • Although there seems to be too many shafts to choose from, Mizuno have made navigating this minefield quite simple. Most Mizuno stockists, if not all have the Shaft Optimizer fitting tool. Basically this is a normal looking golf club which has some sophisticated electronic sensors built into it, to measure 5 of your main swing characteristics (Mizuno Swing DNA).

The 5 characteristics are Headspeed, Tempo, Toe Down, Kick Angle, Release Factor. You take three shots and make a note of these these 5 readings. Once you have all your results the fitter will load up the mizuno software on his pc and inputs the values into the program, this will then tell you which of the 3 mizuno shafts best fit your swing DNA.

To make sure that this is the best combination for you, the consumer can put his chosen head on the 3 different shaft options chosen by the software and hit some shots and get some real time feedback to nail down the best shaft fit for you.

An overhaul for 2019 has a major hardware upgrade, with a Gyro added to the Shaft Optimizer’s existing electronic sensors, allowing fitters to recommend a more accurate lie angle than the traditional lie board method. The Gyro enables the club’s swing plane to now be measured in 3D space along with shaft dynamics, ignoring face rotation through impact for a more accurate lie angle reading. Using a combination of the Gyro and sensors which run throughout the shaft, Mizuno is now able to capture 40 data points from every swing.

2019 Mizuno Iron Line Up and their main features are as follows

    JPX919 Tour

A more compact evolution of Mizunos’ standout tour iron of 2017/18. The JPX919 Tour is surprisingly stable for its size, demonstrated in its tight distance patterns from off-centre strikes – the benchmark for elite level shotmakers. High Density forged in Hiroshima Japan for the softest Mizuno feel yet.

    Main Features:-

  • 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel - Forged from a single billet of Japanese steel for unmistakable Mizuno feel.
  • Grain Flow Forged HD - High Density forging concentrates the grain in our steel more tightly for incredible, precise feedback.
  • Tour grind top edge - Narrowed to match grinds commonly requested on tour. Reduced to 4.6mm on 7 iron (10% measured shrinkage in CAD data).
  • Stability frame - Open at the heel portion to enhance stability and launch, whilst producing a tour-preferred vibration.
  • RH Only

  • JPX919 Forged

Forged feedback with performance ball speeds. The back milled JPX919 Forged is Mizuno’s fastest ever forging in measured ball speed. With trademark workability and elevated feedback, the Forged is Mizuno’s most versatile iron. In the hands of a tour player searching a distance equalizer or an amateur wanting to evolve their game - the 919 Forged delivers on every level.

    Main Features:-

  • A small addition of Boron makes a big difference - Just a trace of Boron makes our steel billet 30% stronger, allowing greater design possibilities in a forged head.
  • Grain Flow Forged HD - High Density forging concentrates the grain in our steel more tightly for incredible, precise feedback.
  • Back Milled Face - CNC milled from the sole up, the 919 Forged boasts a larger area of minimum face thickness for consistently increased ball speeds. Weight removed also allows a deeper centre of gravity for more easily flighted long & mid irons.
